I had three main aims during my airway fellowship. These were achieved despite the interruptions caused by COVID-19.
The first was to develop my practical airway management skills. I have developed expertise with allthe airway management equipment available at Queen's Medical Centre, and performed more than40 awake fibreoptic intubations, many solo.
The second was to develop the knowledge to anaesthetise for any of the ENT/Maxillofacial lists within this busy teaching hospital. I am now comfortable to run all these lists, and have had the opportunity to manage major lists such as for laryngectomy or TMJ replacement under distant supervision.
The third was to develop my non-clinical domains. I have managed to run an airway teaching programme, taught on numerous teaching sessions and courses, have published a letter, presented one project as an international poster and am writing another into a manuscript for publication, and have completed a management course.
As well as the opportunities provided by the hospital itself, both elective and in the emergency setting on call, the consultants are supportive and knowledgeable, and keen to teach. Overall I would highly recommend this fellowship.
