DUTIES OF THE POST
City Hospital and QMC provide maternity services to over 10,000 women. Both centres care for women with complex medical conditions, involving input from various specialities. The fellow will be expected to participate in multidisciplinary planning and care at all stages of pregnancy. There are exciting opportunities to contribute to the service improvement and development of new patient care pathways.
Job Plan
Weekly Hours: Approx. 48 per week
On-call: Resident on-call for anaesthesia joining the pool of senior SpRs, covering theatres, the obstetric anaesthetist on call, and providing support to the ITU trainee.(approx. 1 in 7)
The successful candidate will be expected to attend a number of Labour Suite Management and Risk Management meetings. Once established, they may be asked to provide cover for the anaesthetic clinic as part of weekly sessions.
Core clinical skills and learning outcomes:
To be capable of undertaking the perioperative anaesthetic care for a wide variety of complex obstetric cases and list management independently. This implies ability to:
Provide perioperative anaesthetic care to a wide-range of obstetric cases performed both in the labour ward and theatre, demonstrating a fundamental understanding of the problems encountered
Show the decision making and organizational skills required of an anaesthetist to manage busy labour ward and operating sessions.
Demonstrate the necessary multi-disciplinary leadership, communication and team-working skills necessary to ensure that the care delivered is safe and timely, benefiting both patients and the organisation
Assist colleagues in decisions about the suitability of surgery in difficult situations
Remain up to date with recent developments in obstetric practice, to evaluate these developments and to advise colleagues of useful changes in practice
Provide teaching to less experienced colleagues of all members of the multi-disciplinary team
Audit and Research Requirements
Participation in audit and research is expected. There are regular departmental audit and morbidity/mortality meetings, some of which are dedicated to obstetric issues. There is opportunity to conduct and supervise rolling audits. You will be encouraged and given support to instigate your own research project. Presentation at national and international meetings will be supported.
Teaching
You will be expected to take an active part in the departmental rolling teaching programme. There are opportunities to be involved in the EMSA Obstetric Anaesthesia training day for ST 3/4s at the Trent Simulator Centre. You will be encouraged to contribute to the High Dependency Course for midwives and mandatory Maternity Study Days as well as teaching anaesthetic and obstetric junior trainees. EMSA organises cross-town plenary sessions on some Friday afternoons, often inviting outside speakers, and you should attend when practicable.
Educational Supervision
Posts will be supervised by Dr S Bharmal (QMC) and Dr A Banks (City Hospital). Weekly working patterns and learning objectives will be agreed at the outset and regularly reviewed. Outcomes will be assessed by review of logbook and reflective portfolio.
