One Post CCT Fellowship in Emergency Anaesthesia is available for 12 months. It is based at the Queen’s Medical Centre and is supervised by Dr P. Townsley.
The post is 4 clinical days per week plus on call commitment on the fellow rota.
2 Clinical days are based in the emergency theatres. There are two emergency theatres which run all day and are staffed by Consultants. A third consultant – the “LEAD” coordinates the emergency work. The fellow would act interchangeably with the emergency on-call team, emergency consultants and LEAD consultant to respond to emergency work both in theatres and in peripheral areas such as the emergency department.
This fellowship post provides an opportunity for a post training doctor to develop greater in- depth knowledge and expertise in emergency theatre care to enhance future experience as a consultant.
2 clinical days would be available to the fellow to experience other areas of interest. List allocation is on a weekly basis decided cooperatively by the fellow and supervisors depending on departmental requirements.
Weekly Hours: Approx. 48 per week; including: 20 hours to provide backfill for consultant not on duty, 20 hours direct clinical contact and 8 hours provide on call commitment.
On-call: Resident on-call for anaesthesia joining the pool of senior registrars, covering theatres, trauma calls - major trauma patients in ED department, the obstetric anaesthetist on call, and providing support to the ITU trainee.(approx. 1 in 7).
Clinical Duties
To assist in the provision and development of a safe, effective and efficient anaesthetic service and to support the Trust in its aim to provide the best possible care to patients
To take responsibility with colleagues for the proper functioning of the department.
To undertake out-of-hours responsibilities.
To carry out all duties at the highest possible standard taking responsibility for individual patients in your care and the provision of the service as a whole
To cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences
Any other duties that may be required from time to time
To comply with Trust Health and Safety policies and maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff.
To have knowledge of and employ the basic principles of infection control practice and to ensure adherence to the requirements thereof.
