I have had the opportunity to complete a 1 year fellowship in HPB anaesthesia as part of my advanced training.
It has been a very rewarding experience, with regards to clinical experience gained as well as exposure to audit and quality improvement. The clinical experience has made me confident in the preoperative assessments including CPET, intraoperative management and Level 1 post op care.
The skills I gained in HPB are transferable to any other sub-specialty of anaesthesia which involves major blood loss and regional anaesthesia for post op pain relief.
With the support and guidance of Anaesthesia & HPB consultants, I completed a quality improvement project which involved a baseline audit, an online staff survey, a review of practice, and implementation of change of departmental practice.
The QIP was presented as a poster at a national meeting and the abstract was published in the Anaesthesia journal.
Overall the fellowship has not just given me plenty of clinical experience, it has also contributed multiple valuable additions to my CV.
