Consultant Anaesthetist, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust
I completed the obstetric anaesthetic fellowship at Nottingham University Hospitals between August 2017 and Aug 2018 as an in programme fellowship for my ST7 year. During my year as the Advanced Obstetric Anaesthetic Fellow at Nottingham University Hospitals trust I worked on Labour suite at both campus' covering both emergency and elective work. I anaesthetised women with complex obstetric conditions and those with multiple medical co-morbidities. My year consisted of 6 months spent at QMC followed by 6 months at NCH.
Whilst working as the Obstetric Fellow I took an active role in clinical research, completing the Good Clinical Practice certificate and designing a clinical research project.I successfully submitted a grant application to the Obstetric Anaesthetists Association to fund this. I represented Team NUH at national meetings presenting both posters and oral cases. I won a national prize at the Obstetric Anaesthetist Association “Cases and Clinical Challenges Meeting” London 2018 and I was published in peer reviewed journals as the NUH Obstetric Anaesthetic Fellow.
As the Obstetric Anaesthetic Fellow I have devised and led on service and quality improvement projects The role of Fellow has provided me with time to be actively involved in teaching and as such I organised and delivered several teaching days. My non clinical time allowed me to attend management meetings such as labour suite forum and meetings planning the initiation of the elective caesarean section lists. The role of the Fellow gave me an insight into consultant life at both units and also provided me with opportunities to complete the non clinical domains of the anaesthetic curriculum and prepare for both the consultant application process and interviews. I feel that my year as the Fellow improved my CV but also helped change my mindset from trainee to that of a consultant and as such I was able to preform well at interview and also I was prepared for my consultant job.
At the end of my fellowship I succesfully applied for a substantive obstetric anaesthetic consultant post at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust and I feel a significant part of this was due to my fellowship year.
